Local Legislation Week In Review

Beginning this week you may have noticed the lack of local legislative news on the website. We will report daily on major cities and pending state legislation.

Tyngsboro, MA – The town has voted on the ban of flavored cigars, and has set a minimum purchase price on cigars. It has also outlawed the sale of single cigars and prohibits smoking inside smoke shops, although the town does not have a cigar lounge.
Grayson County, KY – A student lobbying effort has failed to pass smoking bans. In their attempt to pass them measure statewide, Republican Gov. Matt Bevin said the issues should be decided on a local level not a state level. While locally the Fiscal Court voted against the ban as well. Local Judge Executive Gary Logsdon who is a recipient of a double lung transplant who was against the ban states “Are we going to be a Nanny County or Nanny State.”
Evansville, IN – The Parks Board voted 4-1 to ban tobacco products in all 65 parks and pool grounds in the city. The move goes into effect on April 1st and does not include golf courses.
Wareham, Ma – By a 3-0 vote the town voted to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21. In addition the fine for selling to a minor has gone up from $100 to $300.
American Canyon, CA – The city council voted unanimously to prohibit tobacco stores from being allowed to open within the city. The town council will hold a second voted on January 26th where it is expected to pass.
