Law | Ireland Passes Plain Packaging Law

Ireland has become the second country in the world to pass a plain packaging law that is mandatory for tobacco products. Legal action from the tobacco industry is expected to follow. Australia passed a similar measure in 2012. Under Ireland’s new rules, all branding, logos, coloring will be banned off of packaging. The new packaging will be uniform with graphic health warnings. Law | Nebraska Cigar Bars Resume Smoking Effective Immediately

Smokers rejoice. Nebraska Legislative Bill 118 that was sponsored by Republican Senator Tyson O’Neill of Larson and passed last week by a margin of 45-3 has been signed. Upon returning to Nebraska Governor Pete Rickets signed the bill on Thursday that will provide an exception to the statewide smoking ban. Law | Westchester County, NY Looking at Raising Tobacco Age

On Tuesday, the Community Services Committee of the Westchester County Board of Legislators voted in favor of raising the smoking age in the county from 18 to 21. The move was voted on after hearing from the American Lung Association and American Cancer Society. Law | West Virginia Senate Passes Smoking Exemption

The West Virginia Senate voted on Wednesday to pass Senate Bill 109, which would allow certain establishments to become exempt from indoor smoking bans if they obtain permission from their country commission. The bill passed  22-12 led by Senator Craig Blair, a Republican from Berkeley who swayed the chamber’s opinion when he pointed out that several members of the Senate were smokers.
