Avo Domaine 50 Cigar Review

Last night I came across an article about Manny Yarlborough passing away at the age of 51. Manny was an American Sumo wrestler, and one of the original UFC fighters. He was widely considered the worlds largest athlete. I use to spend some time smoking with him in Union, NJ at my friends cigar shop. While I don’t recall the cigars we smoked together I do remember it was around the time that I was big into the Avo Domaine 50. So today I light up the cigar in his memory and the good times spent with this gentle giant.

We recently had Scott Kolisaire on The Cigar Authority podcast who is the brand manager for Avo cigars and he shared with us that the line and size was his favorite AVO as well. The cigar is described as, “Avo’s most personal blend, specially crafted for the connoisseur. Composed of highly aromatic tobacco harvested from Avo’s private estate, this medium-to-full-bodied blend resonates with exceptionally rich character delivering flavors of butter and spice with subtle nuttiness.

Cigar Review: Avo Domaine
Size: 5 15/16 x 50/54 (Domaine 50)
Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut (Cuban Seed)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Medium

The Look: The hickory brown wrapper of the Avo Domaine has some tooth to it and plenty of visible oils. The perfecto shaped “50” is flawlessly rolled. The subtle design changes to the band feel like to me they work best on this particular line due to the colors and use of foil in the band artwork. In the hand the cigar is firm with no soft spots although it does feel a little light in the hand.

The Notes: The cold draw reveals notes of well-defined cocoa with a slight bite reminiscent of mustard. The aroma of the wrapper is tobacco with nothing that really stands out like the cold draw itself which is tremendously different from anything I’ve smoked in quite some time.

As we smoke the first third of the cigar some of the mustard notes from the cold draw make their way onto the finish once the Domaine 50 from Avo is lit. The primary note of the cigar is the typical earthy component found in many Henke Kelner cigars; however it is less dominant than some others. The other notes of the first third are some nuts and a touch of cedar.

In the second third the mustard notes continue to hang around in the background as some notes of cocoa begin to develop. At the half way point the mustard spice remains with dark chocolate and nuts in the background. The retrohale of the cigar enhances the sweet characteristics of the smoke.

The last third sees the mustard like spices fade away as earth and nuts take control of the profile. There is some cocoa and coffee on the finish but also a buttery rich smoothness that exists that is absolutely enjoyable.

The Burn: One of the drawbacks on a perfecto is the draw, with many people complaining its tight. This is in part due to a lack of patience. Once the cigar works past the tip it opens up to a perfect draw. Yes, it does require some effort but I feel that the it enhances the characteristics of the cigar. As the cigar burns the thin combustion line reveals a firm nearly white ash that holds for each third with a bit of flake. The AVO burns cool and remains lit from first light to last puff.

The Finish: The Avo Domaine 50 has long been my go to AVO for a couple of reasons with the first one being the size which is amongst my favorites. The skill that goes into rolling a perfecto is an art and the other reason is the flavor. There is something about the 50 that stands out versus the more traditional sizes.
