AVO Syncro Caribe Robusto Cigar Review

The introduction of the new AVO Syncro Caribe goes back to the roots of AVO in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican tobaccos are blended with other vibrant Caribbean tobaccos to showcase a process they are calling “Natural Distribution” in which the proportions of the tobaccos on any given plant are perfectly matched in the blending process. The ratios of tobaccos from each priming are matched in the blend in all vitolas. Awake your palate with flavors from the Caribbean.

Cigar Review: AVO Syncro Caribe
Wrapper: Dominican Republic
Binder: Ecuador
Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
Length: 5″
Gauge: 50
Size: Robusto

The Look: Packaged in colorful boxes of teal and coral that call your eye for attention. Inside 20 cigars sit in two rows of 10 with a dark Dominican wrapper that has some subtle oils and minimal veins. The band mimics the box with the Avo logo and tropical colors. In the hand the cigar is firm and a hefty weight to it.

The Notes: The cold draw serves up notes of earth and a subtle tangerine zest while the aroma from the foot serves up a hint of molasses, earth and subtle spice. There is something familiar as you would expect, but something different as well that hints at a change of what we would come to expect from the brand. After we toast the foot the initial puff has a plum like sweetness to it.

Smoking our way into the first third of the AVO Syncro Caribe the plum like sweetness is heightened by the retrohale. Around a half-inch in a split-top bread note begins to develop along with a subtle graham cracker. The finish of the cigar offers up some tangerine zest with along with notes of nuts.

As we enter the second third the plum sweetness of the first third has left the building as the focal point becomes citrus with nuances of nuts, earth and mocha. The retrohale serves up some subtle spice and abundance of nuttiness.

As we smoke the last third earthy notes with a touch of mocha dominate the palate along with nuances of nuts that are increased on the retrohale. The finish of the cigar which is relatively short sees more nuttiness, a hint of spice and a touch of earth.

The Finish: For me AVO cigars have always been solid cigars, but they all had that classic AVO taste of barnyard notes. This AVO is different and a departure from what we come to expect from the Davidoff owned brand. My question is will AVO smokers embrace the change, and will those who haven’t been a fan be bold enough to venture back to the brand. In my opinion you should, because this is very different from anything released under the brand umbrella.
