Black Diamond Emerald Cigar Review

Black Friday, traditionally the official start of the holiday shopping season. However, historically Black Friday hasn’t been a huge day for cigar retailers as people tend to wait for the last-minute to buy their cigars. Most buyers of cigars know that the cigars need to be properly stored until pretty close to Christmas morning (or Hanukkah). This year on Black Friday, Diamond Crown is giving a gift to the 27 Diamond Crown lounges across the USA with the official release of Black Diamond.

The cigar which was launched at Two Guys Smoke Shop on August 6th, 2 days before FDA regulations is now officially available. At Two Guys Smoke Shop those who have tried the cigar have spoken highly of the cigar including John (last name omitted at his request) who said, “Black Diamond is the perfect complement to the Diamond Crown line. It has become my favorite JC Newman smoke and I hope that the cigar remains with looming FDA.”

Cigar Review: Diamond Crown Black Diamond
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Connecticut Cuban Seed Sungrown
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Length: 6″
Ring Gauge: 52
Vitola: Toro (Emerald)

The Look: The packaging of the Black Diamond is unlike any other cigars from JC Newman. The highly glossed boxes are elegant and heavy in the hand. A raised emblem denotes Black Diamond is on each box, and silver text is on the front of the box denoting the name and size. Inside are 20 cigars lined up in four rows of five. The band of the cigar is silver foil, red, indigo and black. There is a lot of detail here and embossing gives the band a nice texture. As for the cigar, the dark wrapper has a few thin veins and is rolled with precision.

The Notes: The draw of the Black Diamond has notes of brown sugar and plum. There is a subttle cocoa note as well which is more noticeable on the aroma from the foot of the cigar which also has hints of earth. After toasting and lighting the cigar the initial notes of the cigar are brown sugar.

As we continue through the first third of the cigar, the brown sugar remains dominant and there are notes of leather, cocoa and a touch of wheat. The cigar is incredibly smooth with a subtle strength to it. Through the nose there are notes of burning wood at the fire pit and a subtle pepper.

In the second third of the cigar I can’t help but think I want a rum & coke with a wedge of lime to go with this. It’s a cheap drink for such an expensive cigar, so I am curious if anyone else has a pairing they would recommend for this cigar that launches on Black Friday. The notes are a hint of lime, molasses and wood notes. There is a leather component that fades away around the half way point but remains on the retrohale.

The final third of the cigar sees the notes of leather become dominant with some notes of wood and cocoa in the background. Some of the sweetness remains on the finish and the retrohale of the cigar offers up notes of wood and pepper. The cigar burns cool and is exceptionally smooth from start to finish.

The Finish: Two years to achieve excellence. 730 days, 104 weeks, however you want to look at it, there is only one way to look at this cigar. It is rich, flavorful, smooth, complex or to sum it up in one word, excellent. This cigar right now is only available at Diamond Crown Lounges such Two Guys Smoke Shop. My suggestion is grab them when you see them. It’s worth the price of admission

Score: 94
Price: $19.99 / $359.99
