Cigar Review: Garofalo La Famiglia Connecticut Robusto

In December 2020, United Cigars announced the release of the new Garofalo La Famiglia cigar line which has begun shipping to retailers. The new Garofalo La Famiglia is a special collaboration between New England retailer David Garofalo and Nick Perdomo, Jr., president, and CEO of Perdomo Cigars.

Making a special line of cigars for my close friend, David Garofalo, is an honor for the Perdomo family,” states Nick Perdomo, Jr. “The original Garofalo Legacy Series has been a success over the last ten years, and we know the addition of the new Garofalo La Famiglia will continue to represent the Garofalo family’s passion and dedication to providing the finest premium hand-made cigars to cigar enthusiasts world-wide.

Available in three wrappers; Connecticut, Sun Grown & Maduro today we look at the Connecticut with forthcoming reviews on the Sun Grown and Maduro.

Cigar Review: Garofalo La Famiglia Connecticut
Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut (Aged 5 Years)
Binder: Cuban Seed Nicaragua
Filler: Cuban Seed Nicaragua
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 54
Size: Robusto

The Look: Packaged in stunning 24-count boxes, the Connecticut features an golden vista showcasing the G with a stylized font that reflects Garofalo’s Italian heritage with colors of green, white and red as well as a crown over the top of it. This vista is also replicated on the cigar band. The cigar itself is seamlessly rolled, with the wrapper featuring a nice amount of oils while the foot is well packed and in the hand the cigar has no voids of tobacco.

The Notes: With the cap clipped utilizing a straight cutter, the initial notes are raisins and figs that offers some sweetness and a tartness as well creating a unique but enjoyable cold draw.  The aroma from the foot has a muted raisin note alongside some hints of cedar and hay.

Once the cigar is toasted and lit there is a subtle sweetness along with hints of citrus. As we continue to smoke the first third the citrus quickly dissipates and notes of raisins, ginger, cedar and hay being to emerge. The retrohale adds some cedar, pizza dough and a touch of red pepper.

As we continue to smoke the Garofalo La Famiglia Connecticut notes of cedar become dominant with hints of nuts, figs, caramel and butterscotch. The retrohale continues to serve up notes of red pepper and creme creating a wonderful contrast.

The final third serves up continued notes of cedar with earthy components of wheat and hay while joined but a tasty nuttiness which is dominant as the cigar comes to a close. The retrohale continues to serve up notes of red pepper with a subtle coffee finish.

The Finish: If you judge a book by it’s cover you would expect this to be a mild cigar, especially given Garofalo’s love for cigars with a lower strength profile. However, this is anything but mild as there is a subtle strength to it putting at medium plus. There is a lot going on with the cigar in terms for flavor changes making it a nice addition to the portfolio and a great daily smoke to start the day for those who love a little bit of strength. It’s also available in Sungrown and Maduro and if you want to know which one is my favorite be sure to read my other reviews as they become available.
