Davidoff Chefs Edition 2017 Release Cigar Review

Last year the marketing machine known as Davidoff spun a tale of a cigar that was collaborated with six of the world’s top chefs to create the Davidoff Chefs Edition.

According to material provided by Davidoff, “The Davidoff Chefs Edition offers fine dining and an exceptional cigar for connoisseurs to enjoy after a culinary tour de force. This unique partnership with some of the world’s greatest chefs has inspired Davidoff master blenders to blend a truly memorable cigar.

The Look: Packaged in 10 count boxes that are lacquered, the Davidoff Chefs Edition looks worthy of its price tag. Featuring a dark looking Habano 2000 that is reminiscent of the Colorado Claro, the cigar is a perfect looking specimen. The dual bands feature the classic looking white and gold Davidoff band with a secondary one that denotes “The Chefs Edition” complete with a chefs hat. In the hand the cigar is firm with no voids and a well packed foot.

The Notes:  The cold draw of the Davidoff has hints of graham crackers and mocha that dominate the senses. As an afterthought there is some of that Henke barnyard notes present as well.  On the nose the aroma is earthy with a strong cedar and a faint wisp of the aforementioned graham cracker.

Once the cigar there is a subtle burst of pepper that made me sneeze, however once we get settled in the pepper dissipates as an abundance of cedar takes control for the first inch if this cigar. As the cedar begins to subside some notes of nuts begins to emerge with hints of chili peppers on this incredibly smooth and balanced stick.

In the second third notes of chocolate begin to emerge with some of the aforementioned  chili peppers. As the cigar transitions to the halfway point the notes of the Davidoff Chefs edition reminds me of Thai spices. The cigar has a long woodsy finish especially when retrohaling the cigar.

The last third of the cigar continues subtle spices and notes of cedar that dominate the palate. There is a faint earth on the finish and the retrohale is nutty with hints of chili peppers on the long finish.

The Finish: This cigar is a testament to the master blenders at Davidoff. Each year tobaccos change due to climate. If the blenders don’t make the right adjustments the cigar can taste considerably different. The Chefs Edition is spot on from the 2016 release and it serves up the same experience much like a great chef nails he components for a great meal time and time again.
