Davidoff Selección 702 Limited Edition

Today we light up the Davidoff Selección 702 Limited Edition which was the first cigar back in 2009 to feature the 702 wrapper from Ecuador. To celebrate Davidoff’s 50th Anniversary the company has released these cigars in a limited quantity once again. Will they perform as the original release did? Will these too become a highly sought after collectible? Here are our thoughts on this highly anticipated stick.

The Look: The box that the 10 count Davidoff Selección 702 Limited Edition comes packaged in has a nice curved lid giving it a treasure chest like appeal to it. It’s a darker wood, with gold foil denoting Davidoff and Limited Edition. Inside the 10 cigars are lined up one row and each one looks more delicious than the next. It features the classic Davidoff white label with gold text, and secondary band denoting ” Selección 702″. There are a few veins, and the cigar is firm with a nicely packed foot.

The Notes: With the cap of the cigar clipped, the cold draw is quintessential and stereotypical Davidoff. There is a musty barnyard note, with hints of  grass, hay, earth and a touch of cedar. It’s exactly what I’ve come to expect from Davidoff and it does not disappoint if you are a fan of the brand that celebrates 50 years in 2018. The aroma off the foot is warm and inviting with a touch of mint that makes me crave a mojito.

After we light the cigar the first notes are earth and hay which are the focal point of the cigar for the first inch or do before it becomes more complex with hints of cocoa and coffee along with a subtle pepper notes that is more noticeable on the retrolhale. The cigar also reminds me a bit of cornsilk, but that serves as more of an afterthought.

In the second third the sweetness begins to pull back some as the cigar develops a nice coffee note with a slightly nutty finish. The pepper remains as well and is enhanced on the retrohale. As the second third comes to a close there is still a silky feel to this exquisite cigar from Davidoff.

The last third of the cigar is perhaps the creamiest of the experience with touches of coffee, cream and a hint of nuttiness. The finish of the cigar sees some pepper, but it is even less than it has been in the first two-thirds. I smoked this one down until there was nothing left to hold on to.

The Finish: It’s been about 8 years since I smoked an original release of the 702 wrapper, so my memory of this cigar might not be as stellar if I had smoked it more recently. With that said it reminded me a lot about the experience I had back then, and it did not disappoint one iota. This cigar is a great representation of what the 702 brings to the table. It’s one of those cigars that creates a memory that lasts a lifetime and I am glad to see it back even if only a limited edition.
