Davidoff 702 Series Special T Burn

Davidoff Series 702 Special T Cigar Review

One of the most iconic blends to ever come from Davidoff was the original 702, a limited edition cigar that was met with accolades. This year, Davidoff has released a cigar under the guise of that brand name, that is significantly different then the original release. The most obvious is the wrapper. The original release features a 702 Connecticut wrapper, while this time around it features a 702 Habano wrapper. The other difference is the cigar is released in a multitude of sizes that are the same blend as their corresponding lines, with a different wrapper.

Cigar: Davidoff 702 Series
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Ecuadorian 702
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Length: 6″
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Torpedo

The Look: The 702 Habano is a hybrid wrapper created from three cuban seeds. The Special T Series 702 is laid out in two rows of 10, in a simple, slide top wooden box. The cigars feature the classic looking Davidoff White Label band, and recently the company based in Geneva has put a second band on the cigar to denote the line and size. As for the cigar itself, the chestnut-brown wrapper is evenly colored, with a few thin veins. Under the fingers the wrapper has a subtle sandpaper like feel and is firm to the touch with no soft spots.

The Notes: With the cigar cut utilizing my Jaws V Cut, the cold draw is much like the regular special T line with notes of honey, hay, grass and earth. Meanwhile, the nose from the foot of the cigar has a subtle cedar and honey sweetness.

As we smoke the first this, there is more body on this line then the original Special T. There are notes of pepper and a charred oak that dominate the palate. There are subtleties of coffee and hay on the finish with an exceptionally smooth retrohale.

On the second third there is a subtle bite that is parallel to the notes of oak. So much so, that I believe this would pair exceptional well with some Cognac. It’s a pairing I will try the next time I am smoking outside of work. Some pepper begins to emerge on the retrohale with a finish that becomes earthy and long.

The last third sees the oak notes fade away, as a strong wheat develops. There is some earth and coffee on the palate. The pepper continues on the retrohale with nuances of earth and nuts on the length dry finish.

The Finish: Every cigar of the 702 Series is different. I picked up the Special T version because it is a cigar that I had gone to more often recently from Davidoff. It is the 3rd cigar in the line that I had smoked, and probably my least favorite. For me the best size was the Special R, but I have yet to smoke the Aniversario No. 3 so I reserve the right to change my mind. I will say this though, this cigar should end the argument of how much the wrapper changes things.

Score: 90
