Davidoff Short Perfecto Cigar Review

This week is perfecto week at The Cigar Authority, and today we start the week with the first perfecto cigar we ever smoked that turned us on to the size. It is part of the Davidoff Special Series which marks the renaissance of emblematic classic shapes such as robustos, culebras, perfectos and other figurados.

According to the Davidoff website, The Davidoff Short Perfecto is a beautifully crafted and wholly unconventional cigar, the Special Short Perfecto addresses the senses with an exquisite harmony of leather, nuts, black pepper and spices.

Cigar Review: Davidoff Special
Size:  4 7/8 x 52 (Short Perfecto)
Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Mild

The Look: The Davidoff Short Perfecto is seamlessly rolled with a subtle amount of oils visible. It features the classic white and gold Davidoff band. The veiny cigar is firm to the touch with no soft sports and a hefty weight for the size.

The Notes: The prelight draw reveals notes of hay and wheat with a buttery smoothness. The nose off the cigar is earthy with additional elements of hay.

Once we light the cigar there is dominant notes of earth, and wheat with a subtle pepper. The retrohale brings some added strength to the cigar with a hint of hazelnuts on the finish.

In the second third the wheat and hazelnut notes battle for supremacy with a hint of coffee. Some subtle pepper remains on the finish of the cigar which is moderate in length.

The last third of the Davidoff Short Perfecto the coffee becomes the dominant flavor, with some remaining hazelnuts and wheat not he finish which continues to be moderate in length.

The Burn: Getting an even light on the tip of a perfecto is the key to getting a near perfect burn on the size, which was the case here. The razor-thin combustion line reveals medium gray ash that held for a third of the cigar. The draw was near perfection as well.

The Finish: Those who know me; might be shocked to know this is one of my favorite cigars. Yes, I know I smoke a lot of strong cigars, and I love Nicaraguan smokes. However, there is something about the subtle elegance of the Short Perfecto that is hard to relay in a review. It’s mild, the notes are straight forward, but simply put the smoke takes me to my happy place. Especially if you pour me a 15-year-old Glenfiddich to pair with it.

Score: 92
Price: $15.79 @ Two Guys Smoke Shop

Bullet Points

  • Having spent the last few days with a respiratory illness, this was my first cigar in almost 72 hours.
  • Having not smoked for 72 hours the cigar was more medium than mild which makes me rethink how avid cigar smokes classify the strength versus those who only smoke from time to time.
  • I paired the cigar with water.
  • Davidoff’s website says the smoking time should be 25 minutes but I got 90 minutes out of the cigar.
