Fratello Navetta Inverso Corona Gorda Cigar Review

Today’s cigar comes to us from former NASA employee, Omar de Frias. The name Navetta Inverso translates from Italian as Shuttle Inverse. The cigar was introduced at the 2018 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show in July and it takes the Fratello Navetta and reverses the leaves creating a new experience for the cigar smoker. Manufactured in Nicaragua at the Joya de Nicaragua faculty for Fratello Cigars, today we review the Corona Gorda.

Cigar Review: Fratello Navetta Inverso
Wrapper: Nicaragua Habano
Binder: Ecuador Habano
Filler:  Single Farm Nicaragua, Dominican Republic

The Look: The Fratello Navetta Inverso box has a sleek look to it with a matte white finish and is designed to look like one of the tiles on the Space Shuttle. It has an authenticity to its appearance thanks to the insiders knowledge of Omar de Frias as the box uses a numbering system on it that would allow scientists to indenitify the location of the tile on the orbiter. The Habano wrapper has a fair amount of oils and one thin veins. The stick features the classic looking Fratello band this time utilizing colors of black, white and silver. There is also a footband that covers the lower third of the cigar using the same colors with the Navetta logo that is a hybrid of a tobacco leaf and rocket ship.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Fratello Navetta Inverso reminds me of cross between Mojo Seasoning and Montreal Steak Seasoning, while the aroma off the foot and wrapper offer up much of the same albeit a more muted version. Once the cigar is lit there is an abundance of pepper and citrus notes to start. As we continue through the first third some notes that are reminiscent of a Quinlan pretzel begin to take control of the palate.

In the second third the Fratello continues down the path of the first third with notes of spices and citrus giving the cigar that Mojo feel about it. Occasionally there are some pretzel notes and the cigar has a leathery finish that is quite long. On the retrohale there are notes of white pepper that linger through the notes with a touch of mint.

The final third sees notes of leather become dominant with some nuttiness and spices. The retrohale is white pepper, with some lingering citrus on the finish.

The Finish: I’ll be curious to ask Omar on The Cigar Authority if reversing the process did anything to his knowledge with the nicotine level as this cigar gives off the appearance that it is higher in content. While this isn’t a scientific formed opinion, it is an opinion none the less. The original Navetta is a smoother more flavorful cigar, but this cigar delivers some strength not seen in any other Fratello cigar. The result is an interesting experience but I look forward to smoking this again with Glenfiddich 14-year-old.
