La Aurora 107 Cosecha 2006 Corona Gorda Cigar Review

On my honeymoon I came across a cigar that I could not get enough of. In fact, it was the best cigar I smoked while in Miami, St. Thomas and St. Marteen and it might just be one of the best under $10 cigars I have ever smoked. That cigar is the La Aurora 107 Cosecha 2006. That wasn’t the name it went by when I spoke about it with my friends at Miami Cigar & Company who distribute this stick from the first cigar factory of the Dominican Republic.  You see, I could not remember the name Cosecha for the life of me, so the cigar was known as “La Aurora Coachella 107”.

The Look: The La Aurora 107 Cosecha 2006 comes packaged in 10 count boxes that looks almost the same as the regular 107 line. The only difference is a gold stamp denoting the Cosecha 2007 and the box number. For those curious the first box I smoked 3 weeks ago was box 27/2000. The box I purchased this morning was 429/2000. At first glance the band of the cigar looks like one, but it is actually a secondary band under the primary band giving the illusion of one. The HVA wrapper won’t win any beauty contests as it is veiny and has a brindle like coloring. The cigar however is firmly packed with a nice weight to it, and as I look at the cigar I can’t help but wonder who has rolled this cigar at the factory I have visited over 2 dozen times.

The Notes: The foot of the cigar has a barnyard like aroma and reminds me of the raw tobacco aroma that is prevalent at La Aurora. The aroma takes me back the Dominican Republic and the great people I have met over the years. The cold draw of the cigar has some cocoa, cedar and apricot. Once the cigar is toasted and lit the first notes of the cigar are a subtle chocolate.

As we move into the first third of the Cosecha there are notes of dried apricots with hints of coffee and a subtle chocolate note on the finish. The retrohale of the cigar has a subtle Limón (spanish word for Lime) and a hint of pepper which is quite enjoyable.

The second third of the cigar sees the notes of apricot begin to fade as coffee becomes dominant. The citrus note that was noticeable on the retrohale of the first third makes it way to the palate. The finish is a bit earthy, with some sweetness while the retrohale has some subtle pepper and an abundance of citrus.

The last third of this 6 x 47 Corona Gorda continues with notes of coffee and chocolate. Hints of dried apricot emerge once again with hints of berries and some lime on the finish of the cigar. The aroma is spicy and woody as is the retrohale of this outstanding cigar.

The Finish: There have been some great cigars that have come out this year but this one really stands out for me. I stand by what I said when I called this one of the best cigars I have smoked under $10.00. It is complex from the first light and while I have only smoked a box + 1 cigar so far it has remained consistent. This is one cigar you definitely need in your humidor.
