La Flor Dominicana Tomahawk Cigar Review

On October 29, 2020 Two Guys Smoke Shop in Salem, New Hampshire hosted the first ever La Flor Dominicana Smoke Session in which Jonathan Carney prepared Tomahawk steak. We were joined by Litto Gomez via remote live from the Dominican Republic. In order to commemorate this special event Litto Gomez created this special cigar featuring a Ligero wrapper that was adorned with art work denoting a pair of Tomahawks.

Cigar Review: LFD Tomahawk
Wrapper: Dominican Oscuro Ligero
Binder: Dominican Republic
Fillers: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
Size: 5.75
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Tomahawk (Toro)

The Look: Available in select packs from 2GuysCigars.com the LFD Tomahawk features a dark and oily wrapper from the Dominican Republic. On the wrapper of the cigar is artwork denoting two Tomahawks created with shade grown tobacco. The cigars which are exclusive to Two Guys Smoke Shop are exquisitely rolled with no voids of tobacco and a well packed foot. The 5 packs included in the Gourmet Smoke Bundle are in a commemorative 5 pack that denote the date of the event.

The Notes: The cold draw of the La Flor Dominicana serves up notes of cocoa while the aroma on the foot of the cigar has a subtle molasses and mesquite. Having smoked one last night on the No Bull Podcast, I was eager to light one up again today for a full review. After we toast the foot of the cigar, the initial notes carry over the cocoa from the cold draw.

As we smoke the first third of La Flor Dominicana Tomahawk the cocoa sweetness remains dominant with a hint of grilled jalapeños on the retrohale. The sweetness of the cigar has caught me off guard in a good way as its something I don’t associate with LFD. The finish offers up hints of wheat and cinnamon that doesn’t linger too long on the palate.

As e slide into the second third the cocoa begins to take a backseat as cinnamon becomes the dominant note, especially on the front end of the draw. As we release the smoke into the wild some leather nuances begin to appear which is more La Flor Dominicana-esque. Slowing down the rate of consumption has the leather notes pull back allowing the sweetness of the stick shine through for a much longer time. The finish serves up notes of espresso, cream and a touch of leather as the duration increases.

As we conclude the LFD Tomahawk mocha becomes the dominant flavor profile, with hints of cream and coffee. If the cigar is smoked too fast a bitter leather component is added to the mix, but to truly enjoy all this cigar has to offer, go slow and easy. I lit the cigar up 3 hours ago and I am still loving every puff as much as the first. The finish is long as we put the cigar down for the last time.

The Finish: This LFD Tomahawk which is based on the Ligero line is very different in my opinion. There is core sweetness to the cigar from the start of the stick to the finish which I am hard pressed to find in that part of the portfolio. The result is a collector’s edition that begs to be smoked. It would pair perfectly after a hearty steak dinner, with a Glenfiddich 18. And being from New England, I would throw in a roaring fire in the fireplace. That to me is the definition of a night of relaxation.
