La Galera The Cubes Connecticut Shorts

Earlier this year Jochy Blanco’s La Galera Cigars announced a limited production line called The Cubes which features some of his favorite vitolas. With each cube containing 50 cigars, only 333 boxes would be made. Today we look at The Connecticut Shorts which is a size only available in The Cube collection.

The Look: Packaged in an oversize white Cube the box is a retailers worst nightmare as the box is nearly impossible to display. Inside the cigars which are reminiscent of a Hemingway Short Story feature a light Connecticut wrapper and minimal veins. There is a nice amount of oil present and the cigar is firm with no voids of tobacco.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Connecticut Shorts has notes of earth and hay while the aroma off the foot is earthy.  Once we light the nipple of the perfecto the first note is a vanilla like sweetness.

Moving into the first half of the cigar the vanilla notes remain and as we get past the foot of the perfecto the cigar really begins to open up. There are notes of cedar, brown sugar and honey . The honey really shines on the aroma and the retrohale of this smooth slow smoking perfecto.

The second third of the cigar sees the honey notes really lock in and become the primary focus in terms of flavors. There is also a faint hint of Sarsaparilla that begins to develop on the aroma. The cigar rounds out with a butter richness and nuances of wheat and cedar.

The Finish: When The Cubes were first announced I thought it was a gimmick, and while it still meets the definition of such the “Shorts” version of the La Galera Connecticut might just be my favorite. Its loaded with flavor and it smoked nice and slow. I enjoyed it so much I picked up a handful for this weekend.
