Law | Massachusetts Proposes Statewide Purchasing Age

If at first you don’t succeed try again is the motto for many people, and unfortunately the case for the state of Massachusetts.

Rhode Island, Utah and Hawaii have proposed raising the tobacco age and while Hawaii is a signature away from going into effect none have passed yet. You can now add Massachusetts to the list of state raising to the age of 21.

Democrat Senator Cynthia S. Cream of Newton has introduced a bill that would raise the purchase age of tobacco to 21. The move comes as more than 50 municipalities in the state have raised the age at a local level.

The bill is currently in committee and on the agenda for this session and can be viewed at https://malegislature.gov/Bills/189/Senate/S747.

Massachusetts is home to 6.7 million residents over 10,555 sq mi and became a state in 1788.
