Undercrown Maduro Belicoso Cigar Review

As has become customary after The Cigar Authority podcast we share an in depth review of a cigar we smoked on the show. This week that cigar is the Undercrown Maduro. One of the other cigar we smoked was the Acid Amigos and that review can be read at https://thecigarauthority.com/acid-amigos-cigar-review/.

Cigar Review: Undercrown Maduro
Wrapper: Otapan Negro Ultimo Corte
Binder:  T52 Connecticut River Valley Stalk Cut & Cured Habano
Fillers: Brazilian Mata Fina, Nicaraguan Cuban Seed
Length: 6″
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Belicoso

The Look: Packaged in 25 count wooden boxes, the Undercrown Maduro features an evenly colored Maduro wrapper that has a subtle sand paper feel under the fingers. The cigar features two bands of blue and gold, with the primary band showcasing the Undercrown logo and a secondary band denoting Maduro. In the hand it is firm with no voiced and a well packed foot.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Undercrown feature a hint of molasses and maple syrup while the foot of the cigar offers hint of cedar and earth. Once the cigar is lit there is an abundance of earth with a subtle sweetness.

As the first third progresses the sweetness of the cigar fades away and the cigar becomes leathery with hints of charred meat from a steak grilled just a little long on a barbecue. The finish of the cigar is relatively short with some red pepper on the retrohale.

The second third of the Undercrown from Drew Estate sees an aroma develop that reminds me of charcoal briquettes and leather. There is a subtle coffee note that develops at the midway point of the cigar and begins to take hold as the second third ends. Some pepper remains on the retrohale and the finish of the cigar is surprisingly short.

In the final third the Undercrown sees the coffee notes remain dominant with touches of leather and some continued pepper on the rather short finish.

The Finish: For me the Undercrown Maduro has the notoriety of being the cigar that has the most smoke output of anything on the market. It’s also a cigar that has remained fairly consistent since it’s release.

Score: 89
Price: $176.00 (Box of 20)
