Kearny, MO Considers VFW Exemption

On October 1, 2015 the town of Kearny passed a measure that banned all indoor smoking; despite a plea from the local VFW that said they would lose a lot of business should a ban go into effect and face the possibility of closing their doors. Now, that prediction is close to coming to light.

The local VFW post has lost 25-27 percent of its bar business accord to the Kearney Courier, a local news outlet.

Despite the town looking to create an exemption for the local VFW which in our opinion deserves one because of the sacrifice the fine men and women of the lodge made for our great nation, the ban has caused damage to other local businesses.

According to published reports the local smoking push came from Clean Air Kearny an organization who promised to visit local businesses in numbers after a ban was put in place, and they have yet to live up to that obligation. The result is a number of bars losing business and facing the potential of closing up shop.

As of now there is no plan to hold a vote for the exemption which one member of the Board of Alderman has stated would be unfair to other businesses.
