On Wednesday, March 4th, 2020 we were joined on The After Show by Micky Pegg who has returned to the cigar industry as one of the owners of All Saints Cigars. His partners include a restauranteur and an Air Force Veteran.
Micky who worked for Davidoff and CAO in separate stints returns to the industry with the limited edition Solamente which is only made in one size at TAVICUSA in Nicaragua.
Cigar Review: All Saints Cigars Solamente
Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 58
The Look: Packaged in a simple cabinet style box the Solamente comes in a 20 count box featuring two rows of 10. The cigar has 2 bands of white gold and blue. The primary band features a cross of Saint James, the patron saint of Nicaragua where these cigars are made with the secondary denoting Solamente. The Habano wrapper from Ecuador is loaded with oils and it has a couple of significant veins. In the hand the cigar is firm to the touch, with a hefty weight to it and a well packed foot.
The Notes: The cold draw reminds me of a dry red wine which make me wonder how these would pair with a Malbec. The foot of the cigar is earthy a subtle cedar component. Once the cigar is lit there is some subtle pepper notes especially on the aroma.
Moving into the first third the pepper subsides as a brief note of chocolate emerges before pulling back. The cigar has an oak component and a touch of leather along with a meaty quality to it. This cigar would still pair well with a nice red wine.
The second third sees the leather component grow with some subtle char notes and an abundance of oak. The retrohale of the cigar has a subtle cinnamon sweetness which also exists on the resting aroma of the Solamente.
As we enter the last third of the debut cigar from All Saints Cigars a salted nut begins to emerge while leather remains dominant with a touch of oak on the finish.
The Finish: The main band of the cigar states, “Odit Dominus Ignavus Agit” which translates to The Lord Hates A Coward. One has to admire Micky Pegg’s bravery for getting back into the industry with so much uncertainty facing it. I have one knock on this cigar, the size. It’s flavorful, but 58 is just to big. Thankfully the company has another regular release set to ship on St Patricks Day called, Dedication. In the meantime, this is a winning first release.
