What has picked up steam in small town America is now gaining momentum in big cities. The city council of Cleveland, Ohio has raised the age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.
On Monday, the City Council passed a measure that not only raises the smoking age to 21 they also announced starting in 2017 the city will only hire tobacco-free employees.
The measure to increase the age from 18 to 21 was passed by a 13-3 margin, however it will not go into effect until 4 months after the Mayor signs it into law.
Retailers who sell to minors would receive a first offense fine of $250, while additional violations would carry with it a second degree misdemeanor charge that carries with it a 90 day jail sentence.
The measure to prohibit the hiring of tobacco users in 2017 passed by a 14-2 vote.
