On the May 9th Episode of The Cigar Authority we smoked the Diamond Crown No. 4 from JC Newman Cigar Company which was part of the care package. According to the JC Newman website, in celebration of J.C. Newman Cigar Company’s 100th Anniversary in 1995, Stanford Newman joined Carlos Fuente, Sr., to develop an exceptional series of Super Premium cigars. Stanford dreamed of making the best cigar in the world with no regard for how long it would take or how much it would cost, his dream was realized in the Diamond Crown cigar.

The Look: The cigars come packaged in a blue box, that once opened reveal a cabinet stye box that holds 15 cigars displayed vertically instead of horizontally. In the last year or so the bands of the cigar have been tweaked to give the cigar more of a luxury appearance that it so richly deserves. Instead of being matte, the band now how gold foil and subtle embossing. As for the cigar, the blend remains the same and features a Connecticut wrapper. It’s well packed with no soft spots and a nice weight to it.
The Notes: The cold draw of the Diamond Crown No. 4 has a subtle butter note with hints of earth. The aroma off the foot is earthy with hints of cedar. Once we toast and light the cigar the first notes are a subtle butterscotch.
Moving into the first third the subtle butterscotch notes slowly begin to fade as the cigar develops a wheat component. Moving through the first third a sweetness begins to develop along the lines of a subtle vanilla like note that is heightened by the retrohale.
In the second third a well-defined almond note begins to take hold of as the dominant flavor with subtle vanilla notes remaining on the retrohale. The second third of the cigar continues to be earthy and a bit salty as well. The finish at this point of the cigar is moderate in length.
The last third of the Diamond Crown still continues to deliver some nuttiness but the almond definition has left the experience. The addition of some strong cedar notes become the dominant flavor profile with a touch of espresso and hay. The retrohale offers some spice which transitions this cigar from mild to medium.
The Finish: As a person who likes cigars stronger, the Diamond Crown Maximus is more along my lines. But at 12pm on a Saturday morning the Diamond Crown classic is a great way to start the day.
