According to a press release from the city of Edinburg, TX the City Council unanimously amended an ordinance that makes smoking illegal within the city limits. The ban prohibits smoking in places of employment, public places, outdoor areas and all city owned facilities.
These spots include but are not limited to the local aquarium, offices, hotels, motels, bars, bingo parlors, comedy clubs, convention center, elevators, theaters, adult care, lobbies, hallways, common areas of buildings and condos, retail stores, parks, and sports arenas.
The ordinance basically includes everything with the exception of private residences and tobacco stores.
The measure which is now in effect carries a first violation fine of $200, a second violation would result in a $500 fine with a third violation resulting in a fine of $2,000. The ordinance will be enforced by the Police and Fire Departments.
