As many states see there legislatures come back to the capital and budgets being due it is the time of year that we see proposed tax hikes. Some of these will pass, and some will not if the community speaks up against them. It is important to let your local officials know you will not vote them back in if they raise taxes.
This time around it is Kentucky which has seen the introduction of HB 247 by 3 Democrats which seeks to raise the tobacco tax 20% on cigars. The measure comes from Tom Burch, Mary Lou Mazian and David Watkins and would raise the existing cigar tax from 15% to 18%.
Add Kentucky to the list of states with legislatures that will have to deal with a proposed tobacco tax increase, as three state representatives have introduced a bill that would raise the tax on other tobacco products from 15 to 18 percent.
If passed, the new tax would go into effect on August 1st.
