La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero “A” Cigar Review

Back in 2007 La For Dominicana released, in 10 count boxes, the La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero “A” that retailed for $16.00 each. While the cigar has long been sold out we have some that will make an appearance in the Sponsor’s Pack next week (at the time of posting). If you don’t know what the Sponsor’s Pack is, you can find the link on the right-hand side of the The Cigar Authority website. Each week we feature a group of cigars at a special price as a way for you to try some cigars of brands that have sponsored The Cigar Authority.

Filler: Dominican  Republic

The Look: Packaged in 10 count cabinet boxes, the La Flor Dominicana “A” has an intimidating look about it. When you smoke slow, such as I do this has the potential of being a 3 hour smoke. Featuring the old style La Flor Dominicana bands the cigar has a lot of tooth to it, even coloring and a fair amount of oils. The foot is slightly under filled but the cigar is firm.

The Notes: Once the cigar is clipped with my Jaws Cutter the cold draw serves up heavy notes of cedar, graham cracker, cinnamon and a slightly floral note. If the cold draw is any indication, age has really had a positive impact on the “A” from La Flor Dominicana. The aroma of the cigar from the foot has hearty notes of wood.

Once the cigar is toasted and lit there is an abundance of cedar present, that subsides in the first half-inch. Once the cedar is pulled back to manageable amounts there is a myriad of flavors that dance on the palate. There are notes of cinnamon and graham that mingle together in perfection with hints of floral undertones lingering in the background.

Moving into the second third some spice comes into play which is surprising to me how long it took to appear. While this cigar has a lot of age on it, the strength of the cigar has toned down considerably although for most, it will still classify as medium-full. There are still hints of cinnamon and a faint molasses that appears with a slightly chalky finish that reminds me of the old cigarette candies from my youth.

The last third of the La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero “A” transitions from something old to something new with the last third becoming quintessential La Flor Dominicana. While the cedar becomes dominant and the sweetness takes a backseat some spice develops through the nose and on the finish.

The Burn: While the burn of the cigar started out off-center for about an inch it wound up self-correcting and was perfect for the remaining eight inches. The white ash held for an inch and a half with no flake what so ever. This slow burning cigar lasted 2.5 hours, had a perfect draw and remained lit for the entire duration.

The Finish: I’ve often said that an Aged Opus X is one of the best cigar smoking experiences one could have. While I don’t have the patience to age them, this cigar rivals that cigar and might even surpass it. Hands down one of the best “A” cigars I have ever had, the La Flor Dominicana offers robust, defined notes that you can really sink your teeth into. Easily one of the best cigars I have had the pleasure of smoking.
