Padron is one of the best selling brands in the industry. They exclusively use tobaccos grown on the family’s farm in Nicaragua where they create all of their blends. Today I wanted to revisit their “thousands” series, since they are a more affordable option for an every day smoke compared to their higher-end anniversary lines. This is the Padron 4000 Maduro.
What am I Smoking?
Cigar: Padron 4000 Maduro
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 6.5 Inches
Ring Gauge: 52
Power: 5/10
Packaging & Design
These cigars come packaged in lacquered wooden boxes of 26. The lid showcases the classic Padron logo burned into the wood and size designations stamped onto the sides. The inner lid has the same logo, and in the box are two rows of cellophaned cigars.
The Look
The cigars themselves appear rustic and rugged. The wrapper feels thick and has some nice tooth to it. Although there are minimal veins on the wrapper, there are some visible seams. The cigar has a slightly bumpy feel to it, but has an even pack throughout. Aromas from the foot include notes of leather and pepper, and the prelight draw offers a similar taste.
The Smoke
Upon lighting, the first apparent notes are powerful and up front. The taste of black pepper and coffee are followed by a backbone of earth and cedar. The finish is short, but leaves a clean palate for the next draw.
The second third offers a deeper smoking experience than the first. Notes of leather and bitter-sweet dark chocolate make an appearance that balances out the earthy nuances of the smoke. The burn was slightly wavy at the start of the halfway mark, but has since evened itself out.
Finishing up, the profile has gotten stronger but the notes have stayed relatively the same. A sweetness has built on the wrapper, making for a nice finish on the lips. The cigar heated up a bit during the last few inches, and the peppery sensations that were present at the start have come back overall interesting smoke.
Final Thoughts
The Padron 4000 Maduro was a solid smoke and offered quite a bit of complexity. For the price, it’s a very good choice for a consistent every day cigar. They come in a variety of different sizes to choose from, including a natural shade version as well. Consistency is Padron’s strong suit, and this series is no exception.
