Do as I say, not as I do could be the mantra for the Peabody Board of Health. Last night the city passed a new ordinance that would raise the tobacco age to 21. According to a report in the Salem News, the Peabody Board of Health Chairman Bernard Hororwitz began smoking at 18 and he doesn’t want todays 18 year old to have that choice.
The meeting was sparsely attended with 10 people in attendance that was split down the middle on the issue and in the end the Board of Health unanimously voted to approve the new age requirement of 21.
The measure goes into effect in 120 days, and Peabody joins the roughly 28% of the communities in the state that have raised the tobacco purchase age.
