In 2015, Rocky blended a cigar featuring a smooth Habano-seed wrapper. Rocky had decided that this great blend would develop even further with aging, so he ordered a short production run of 100,000 cigars. The cigars were rolled and laid to rest in an aging room where they remained for nearly three years. Now the the Aged, Limited & Rare have reached retailer and today we offer up a review.
Cigar Review: Rocky Patel Aged Limited & Rare
Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Robusto
The Look: Packaged in a darker wooden box made to look like an older piece of wood, the cigars are laid out in two rows of 10. In typical Rocky Patel fashion, the cigar features two bands with the first being white and antique brass with the Rocky Patel logo. The secondary band uses the samples colors and denotes Aged, Limited & Rare. The Habano wrapper is loaded with oils and the cigar is firm to the touch with a well packed foot.
The Notes: Once the cap is clipped the cold draw of the cigar is reminiscent of marshmallow fluff with hints of chocolate and graham. Yes, the cold draw is reminiscent of a S’More. The aroma off the foot of the cigar reminds me of a cross between instant coffee grinds and cocoa. While that may not seem flattering, it triggers a memory of my mom and dad who thought Maxwell House was the greatest thing ever.
Once the cigar is lit the initial note is chocolate with a hint of coffee. As the cigar progresses its exceptionally smooth with subtle notes of licorice and cinnamon in the background. Through the nose the licorice notes are enhanced with a subtle malt nuance.
The second third sees the chocolate notes remain dominant with hints of coffee. The coffee is more along the lines of a cappuccino with a milky creaminess and hints of cinnamon. The retrohale still has a hint of malt and some pepper notes that grow in intensity.
As we finish out the Rocky Patel Aged, Limited & Rare the licorice notes become more prevalent but the cigar still shows hints of a mild coffee and dark chocolate. The retrohale shows off some continues licorice and cinnamon with pepper notes on the finish.
The Finish: With 3 years of age on the cigar the fact that is exceptionally smooth should be no surprise. Its a medium body smoke with a lot of complexity.
Score: 91
