Illinois Proposal Looks To Raise Age to 21

Ever since Hawaii became the first state to raise the tobacco purchase age to 21; numerous states have looked to follow suit. Chicago City Council Reverses Course, Advances Ordinances

What a difference a day makes, or in this case two days. The Chicago City Council’s Finance Committee voted 22-9 to approve an amended tobacco ordinance that had previously failed only days prior. The amended ordinance increases the legal age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21. Chicago City Council Shuts Down Mayor’s Tobacco Proposals

A few weeks ago we reported that the Mayor of Chicago; Rahm Emanuel (D) wanted to impose an increased tobacco tax on cigars and other tobacco products. Chicago, Illinois Looking To Raise Purchase Age to 21

Earlier this week we reported that the city of Chicago was looking to add a tax to cigars.  Today, Mayor Rahm Emanuel took further aim at the tobacco industry at the first City Council meeting of the year. Chicago, IL Proposes Cigar Tax

We have seen states impose cigar taxes, counties impose cigar taxes and now Chicago wants to impose its own cigar tax under a plan from Mayor Rahm Emanuel. According to a published report from the Chicago Sun Times a $6 million dollar proposal for an orientation program for incoming high school students would be paid for by increasing the tobacco tax which would include a 90 cent tax on full-sized cigars. Law | Chicago Park Smoking Ban

On Wednesday the park district board of Chicago is set to vote on a proposal that will ban smoking in any of Chicago’s parks or harbors. There is already a ban at beaches, park district buildings and playgrounds. If approved the violation would carry a $500 fine. The Chicago Park District is the oldest and largest park district in the U.S.A, with a $385 million annual budget.

News: IPCPR Convention Heading to Chicago?
