Cabaiguan by Tatuaje gets its name from a municipality and town in the province of Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. The town was founded in 1894 and is best known for its cigars. In addition to a small cigar factory the town also has a oil refinery and a prison.
As for the cigar it was released in 2004 and was originally made at El Rey de los Habanos in Miami, FL before production was moved to Nicaragua.
Cigar Review: Tatuaje Cabaiguan
Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 5 5/8
Ring Gauge: 54
Size: Guapo (Toro)
The Look: Packaged in wooden boxes, the Caibagaun Guapo is laid out horizontally in boxes of 20 cigars. Inside, the Guapo looks different then other cigars in the line with some silver foil on the band which features an old English style C as the logo. Featuring a pig-tail cap, the wrapper sports some significant veins, and a fair amount of oils. The foot of the cigar is well packed, but you can see a lot of the vein structure from the tobacco that makes up the filler. According to a Facebook post made by brand owner Pete Johnson these are integral to the flavor and strength of the cigar and should never be looked at as a negative. We tend to agree as long as they don’t expect the draw or burn.
The Notes: Once the cap is clipped the cold draw of the cigar serves up notes of cashews and earth, while the aroma off the foot has a subtle sweetness of cocoa and raisins. After we toast the foot of the cigar the first note served up from Cabaiguan is a honey like sweetness.
As we move into the first third some subtle pepper notes begin to emerge that create a nice contrast to the honey sweetness that takes hold as the primary note. As the first third comes to a close the develops a creamy finish, and a touch of cedar. The retrohale offers some pepper notes with a moderate finish.
As we move into the second third the notes of salted cashews become dominant with hints of cedar in the background. The cigar remains creamy and smooth and as we cross over the half way point the cedar notes become dominant.
With the Cabaiguan Guapos coming to a close there are elements of nuts with cedar in the background as notes of leather become dominant. The retrohale sees black pepper grow in intensity on this enjoyable cigar.
The Finish: The Cabaiguan Guapo remains one of my favorite Tatuaje releases in the history of the company. It’s a classic cigar with straight forward notes that has remained consistant throughout the years and it’s that reason that keeps me coming back time and time again.
