Zippo Announces Discontinuation of Branded Butane Lighters

Earlier in 2015, Zippo Manufacturing Company sold the trademark rights and usage of the Zippo “BLU” brand to Lorillard Tobacco  Company.  Since then Zippo has continued to manufacturer and sell the lighter as, the Zippo Butane Pocket Lighter.

According to a letter sent to retailers, Zippo has announced that after a thorough evaluation of future sales and the increased difficulty in sourcing components, the significant increase in the cost of components, the cost of re-branding and the desire to concentrate on other opportunities, they have decided it is best for the company to end production.

As of January 1, 2016 Zippo Manufacturing Company will discontinue the manufacturing, distribution and sales of all Zippo branded butane pocket lighters.

The letter goes on to state that all inventory retailers have may be returned to the company  and that all Zippo “BLU” messaging must end by December 31, 2015. This includes any use of the BLU name, BLU branded lighter products, product packaging, displays, POP, advertising, signage, sales collateral, catalogues and event marketing. Failure to do so, could result in liability for trademark infringement of the new owner’s trademark.

Zippo added that will continue to provide customer service for all Zippo Butane Pocket Lighters sold prior to 2016.
