On February 1st, 2020 we featured a cigar from the care package on The Cigar Authority. That cigar is one of Mr. Jonathan’s favorite smokes and unless you’ve been smoking for a long time you might not remember 22N/83W which is made at J. Fuego.
22N/83W are the Latitude and Longitude where you will find Hacienda el Corojo, a plantation that once (1930 – 1990) grew arguably the best tobacco in the world. Today, having low yield and being highly susceptible to disease that tobacco seed is not used there anymore, but the seeds still exist.
22N/83W uses authentic El Corojo seed in its entire 5-Country blend, from its Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican el Corojo filler, to its Costa Rican certified el Corojo binder and is finished off with a lush, oily Brazilian el Corojo seed Wrapper.
Cigar Review: 22N/83W
Wrapper: Brazilian Corojo
Binder: Costa Rican Corojo
Filler: Corojo from Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua
Length: 5.5″
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Belicoso Fino
The Look: Packaged in cabinet style boxes of cedar, the 22N / 83W comes sans cello and features a band of yellow and black with a compass logo and images of a map on the side. The dry looking Corojo wrapper from Brazil has a brindle effete with a couple of noteable veins. In the hand the cigar is firm to the touch with a nice weight to it.
The Notes: The cold draw has a sweetness to it along with some salted cashews. The aroma off the foot of the cigar is an enticing cedar and earth. Once the cigar is toasted and lit the first notes are sweet cedar.
As we smoke the first third the cedar notes remain dominant with a sweetness to it much like the aroma of fresh cut wood. In addition to the cedar notes there is some subtle nuttiness and wheat. The retrohale sees the addition of black pepper which carries over to the finish with some nuttiness.
It the second third an espresso note beings to take hold with hints of earth and an abundance of pepper especially through the nose on the retrohale. As the second third comes to a close some wheat and walnuts linger on the somewhat lengthy finish.
The 22N / 83W concludes with well-defined notes of walnuts and cedar as the pepper notes begin to subside. The aroma of the cigar is sweet and woodsy with a moderate finish.
The Finish: One thing I never mention when I review a cigar is the burn. It’s a hand made product and burn issues will exist on every cigar one time of the other. However, the burn on this cigar really stood out with its crisp burn line and smooth white ash. AIf you enjoy corojo this cigar is right in your wheel house, it’s in mine. It’s one of those cigars that Mr. Jonathan and I firmly agree on.
