Abuelo Churchill Cigar Review

This week on The Cigar Authority during the first how we smoked Abuelo which was part of The Cigar Authority Care Package. The name Abuelo means Grandpa it is produced in Honduras. Can a cigar that retails for under $2.50 when purchased by the box be any good? We shared our thoughts on the show and today we offer a full on review.

Cigar: Abuelo
Wrapper: Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Honduras
Length: 7″
Ring Gauge: 54
Size: Churchill

The Look: Packaged in 20 count cabinet boxes, the packaging has a no frills appearance. The brown and white label denotes Abuelo and the natural wrapper some sheen to it with average size veins. In the hand the cigar is fairly light, but there are no voids of tobacco an a well packed foot.

The Notes: The cold draw of Abuelo offers up a nice sweetness with a touch of pecans that are easily identifiable. The aroma off the foot is manure, which is considered the ultimate compliment to tobacco growers as weird as that sounds.

Once the cigar is lit it is pretty straight forward notes of cedar, nuts and earth. The earthy aspect carries over to the finish along with a touch of cream soda. The retrohale of Abuelo is very smooth with no pepper and a hint of sweetness.

In the second third, the earthy notes become dominant with a touch of nougat on the finish. At the half way point nots of pecans join the mix which is extremely enjoyable. The retrohale serves up notes of cedar which make it on to the moderate finish of the cigar.

As we smoke the final third cedar becomes the primary component of the profile with a touch of vanilla and continued nougat. The retrohale sees more cedar and for the first time a touch of pepper.

The Finish: At the risk of sounding like a cigar snob, I was dreading smoking this cigar. While this is my grandfather’s cigar I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Will it replace the higher end premium smokes I normally smoke, no. Would I smoke another, most definitely. With finances being tough non of days with layoffs, Abuelo satisfies the desire for a cigar, and you really can’t ask for anything more than that.
