On Wednesday, Portland City Council will hold a hearing discuss a city-wide smoking ban in public parks. The hearing comes in advance of a vote by the City Council that is scheduled for February 18. If it passes, the smoking ban would begin in July. Since 1993 tobacco retailers in the state of North Dakota has been battling a tobacco tax increase with success. It also appears that this year the increase proposed by Republican Jon Nelson of Rugby will not pass as well. The state of Iowa has proposed a new bill that would raise the tobacco age from 18 to 19. Senate Study Bill 1109 was advanced on Thursday by a 2-1 vote by a subcommittee in the Iowa Senate. The bill now moves to the Senate Education Committee. You can add Rhode Island to the growing list of states looking to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco to 21. As we reported in January, Fort Collins is looking to ban smoking in much of the city. The city council on Tuesday evening voted to give the initial approval to expand the restrictions. The new restrictions will include outdoor public spaces which includes all city facilities and the busiest part of Old Town.
