Balmoral Lancero FT Anejo XO Cigar Review

Balmoral Cigars comes to us from Royal Agio who has been in the business since the early 1900’s. It was founded by Jacques Wintermans and the company became one of the largest cigar compinies in Europe. Once distributed by Drew Estate, the company announced this week it was taking over it’s own distribution in a press release earlier this week.

Cigar Review: Balmoral Lancero FT Anejo 18
Wrapper: Brazil Arapiraca Sun-Grown
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Brazil, Dominican Republic & Nicaragua
Length: 7″
Ring Gauge: 40
Size: Lancero

The Look: The cigar comes packaged in 10 count boxes for this vitola in a nice dress box of muted gray coloring. The cigars inside are on one row, but segmented into two sections of five. The cigar itself features a pigtail cap with a brindled wrapper, that has one noticeable vein. For the size, the cigar has a nice weight to it with no soft spots and a well packed foot.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Balmoral Anejo XO Lancero reminds me of Bavarian pretzels complete with salty components while the foot of the stick serves up some subtle spices and a hint of chocolate. Once the cigar is lit there is a subtle pepper to it, and perhaps because my buddy Travis Lord put it into my head, there is hint of sea salt.

Entering the second third of the cigar there is still a component of sea salt with hints of wheat and a touch of moss in the sense that it would pair well with a nice peaty scotch. As the cigar moves on to the half-way point a hint of clove begins to emerge as if they were baked with an Easter ham. The aroma of the cigar is woodsy as is the finish that is enhanced on the retrohale.

As we close out the Balmoral Lancero FT Anejo 18 notes of oak dominate the cigar on all aspects such as the mouthfeel, retrohale and aroma. There is continues hints of clove present as well with a slightly earth finish.

The Finish: The Balmoral Lancero has relit my love affair of lancero cigars from a performance standpoint. It stayed lit throughout and had a damn near perfect burn with an ash that holds on. As for the cigar it is full flavor and medium in bodied with an enjoyable flavor profile. It is definitely something I would visit again and I look forward to trying other sizes in the line.

Score: 90
Price: $13.49 / $119.99
