Camacho Liberty Series 2012 Throwback Cigar Review

The Camacho Liberty Series, now 17 years strong, has become one of the most highly anticipated annual releases for collectors and passionados of bold, full-frontal cigars. Launched ahead of the July 4th holiday to celebrate and honor the birth and history of the United States, the 2019 release ventures back to one of the favorite and limited blends — a throwback to Liberty Series 2012.

The 2012 Throwback blend utilizes four different primings, all which come from a single farm and single vintage, and are aged four years. Due to the rarity of the tobaccos needed to precisely match the original blend, only 50,000 cigars / 2,500 boxes were produced globally.

Cigar Review: Camacho Liberty Series 2012 Throwback

Ring Gauge: 48/54/48

The Look: The gorgeous packaging of the Camacho Liberty Series 2012 Throwback has the American flag on the box. Within the flag are squares of images representing the history of America. Upon removing the lid from the box, inside sits individual cigar coffins in two rows of 10. Inside the slide top coffin sits the 11/18 size Camacho with a red and silver band. The cigar is wrapped in cello although I wish Camacho would return to the days of tissue wrapping the cigar. The wrapper has a few significant veins and the cigar is firm to the touch with a well packed foot.

The Notes: Once the cap is clipped the cold draw is a well defined black cherry note with a hint of cedar while the aroma off the foot has a subtle pepper, earth and an abundance of cedar. After we toast the foot of the tapered 11/18 size the Camacho Liberty serves up notes of cedar.

As we progress into the first third the cedar notes remain dominant with hints of rye and earth. The retrohale of the cigar changes things up and gives the cigar some much needed layering. There are notes of sunflower seeds, subtle cocoa and a hint of cinnamon that lingers on the finish.

The second third of the Liberty Throwback 2012 sees cedar notes remain dominant as the cinnamon transitions from the aroma of the cigar to the palate. Around the midway point some notes of chocolate begin to emerge while the retrohale has notes of pepper and molasses with a subtle caramel finish.

The last third continues down the path laid out in the previous two-thirds which is welcomed by this cigar smoker. Notes of cedar, cinnamon, and a subtle cacao envelope the palate while the retrohale serves up some pepper with a sweet finish which is moderate in length.

The Finish: I can’t recall what the original 2012 tasted like but if I had to describe this cigar without going into detail it would be classic Liberty. Everything you expect from the yearly release is here creating the Camacho experience you expect from this series. The flavor profile, packaging and the size are all on point. It’s a delicious cigar and definitely a throwback to what defines the brand. Smooth and balanced it’s a cigar I look forward to lighting up at a BBQ or three this summer.
