Two Saturdays ago I was awakened at 4am with severe chest pains that I thought was a heart attack. After my girlfriend convinced me to go to the hospital, the pains subsided as we neared the Emergency Room and I opted not to go in. Three days later the same pains returned at work and my coworkers convinced me to go to Urgent Care where I was diagnosed with gallstones. Long story short it’s time to remove my gallbladder, so today with my pre surgery consultation I needed something short to smoke as I have an early afternoon appointment.
Cigar: La Boheme
Size: Mimi (3.5 x 46)
Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Medium
Source: Boutique Blends
The Look: The Mimi is very small in stature and with the exception of the missing fuse, it looks like it could be related to the Firecracker. The wrapper of the cigar is loaded with oils and has some thin veins but none of which are raised above the leaf. The roll of the cigar is one of the best looking rolls I have ever witnessed, however there is a small void on foot. In the hand the cigar is firm with an average weight for the size.
The Notes: The cold draw of the La Boheme Mimi offers up some sweet caramel notes with some nuttiness in the background while the aroma off the unlit foot is that of wood.
With the size of the cigar I am not going to break it down in thirds but it starts off with some noted of crushed red pepper and hints of nutmeg. About an inch into the cigar it is joined by notes of wood that is reminiscent of pine and nuts. The red pepper is especially noticeable through the nose and as the cigar comes to a close there is a sweetness present similar to the caramel on the prelight draw.
The Burn: For a little cigar the Mimi lasted me about 60 minutes though I will mention as I have before, I am a very slow smoker. The draw was perfect and the white ash held for close to half of the cigar. The burn line was ultra thin, albeit it slightly wavy. It never needed to be touched up and it remained lit from start to finish.
The Finish: The La Boheme Mimi served its purpose as I only had an hour to smoke before heading to the surgeon. In that time the cigar satisfied and relaxed me but given a normal day I rather smoke the larger sizes which seem to have more complexity and less spice.
