Last week on The Cigar Authority LIVE Radio Podcast, Classic Cigars came about in the conversation. That got me remembering that I haven’t reviewed one for you guys yet, so today’s the day. The Classic line of cigars comes to us from the Dominican Republic and utilizes three different wrapper shades, all of which provide a different experience for a fantastic price. This is the Classic Maduro robusto.
What am I Smoking?
Cigar: Classic Maduro Robusto
Wrapper: Dominican Maduro
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Length: 5 Inches
Ring Gauge: 50
Power: 5/10
Packaging & Design
These cigars come packaged in cedar boxes of 20 cigars. The design is barebones with a shiny label on the top and front denoting the blend and wrapper, and the bands follow suit.
The Look
As for the look of them, the Classic Maduro has some veins and seams, but they’re nothing off putting. It give the allure of the traditional hand made cigars from yesteryear. The construction is firm but has a spongy give when pressure is applied. Aromas from the foot include cedar, wood and dark chocolate while the prelight draw offers a slight bit of pepper and tobacco.
The Smoke
During the first third, I’m able to pick up on some of those same notes that were in the aroma. Dark chocolate and a prune like sweetness are the star players at this point. The finish is quick, fading fast to allow anticipation for the next draw.
The second third is staying fairly consistent with the first, not changing too much after a couple inches down. The burn is solid, however I did need to touch it up once to fix a slight wrapper issue. But fear not, the flavor was unchanged.
Finishing up on the Classic Maduro, and things are starting to change. As the cigar heats up, more notes of espresso and almonds are mix things up a bit. The burn is solid and unwavering at this point, offering a clean experience topped off with a great draw.
Final Thoughts
For a cigar that costs under $4.00, I have no complaints. Compared to some other cigars out there at this price point, the Classic Maduro is a rockstar. This is one of those cigars you can hand out to your friends like you do with candy on Halloween. They won’t hurt your wallet, and they’ll certainly please the palate.
