The Look: The 702 Habano is a hybrid wrapper created from three cuban seeds. The 702 Series 2000 is laid out in 5 rows of 5 cigars. The cigars feature the classic looking Davidoff White Label band and a secondary band on the cigar denotes line and size. As for the cigar itself, the chestnut-brown wrapper is evenly colored, with a few thin veins. There is a nice amount of oils present and the cigar is slightly spongy.
The Notes: With the cap of the cigar clipped, the cold draw is quintessential and stereotypical Davidoff. There is a musty barnyard note, with hints of grass, hay, earth and a touch of cedar. The aroma off the foot is warm with touches of grass and wheat.
After we light the cigar the first notes are earth and hay which are the focal point of the cigar for the first inch or do before it becomes more complex with hints of coffee along with a subtle pepper notes that is more noticeable on the retrohale which also offers up a subtle fig component.
In the second third the fig sweetness makes it way to the palate as the coffee notes remain dominant. The pepper remains as well and is enhanced on the retrohale. As the second third comes to a close the sweetness begins to fade.
The last third of the cigar sees the coffee notes take on a gritty Turkish feel to it with a hint of nuttiness. The finish of the cigar sees some pepper and the subtle nuance of a fig like sweetness that lingers on the finish.
The Finish: This is the first cigar I’ve had since Saturday and it was gifted to me and I was amazed at the flavors the tobacco had to offer. It’s always good to reset the palate from time to time, and to come back to a cigar as clean and smooth as this one was is the perfect way to engage in cigar smoking.
