Earlier today we celebrated our 8th Anniversary of The Cigar Authority. As is each Saturday after the live broadcast of the longest running Cigar show on the internet, we serve up a more in-depth review of a cigar we featured. Today, that cigar is the Davidoff 702 Series Aniversario No. 3.
Cigar: Davidoff 702 Series
Wrapper: Ecuadorian 702
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Length: 6″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Toro (No. 3)
The Look: The 702 Habano is a hybrid wrapper created from three cuban seeds. The Aniversario No. 3 Series 702 is laid out in one row of 10, in a simple, slide top wooden box. The cigars feature the classic looking Davidoff White Label band and a second band on the cigar to denote the line and size. As for the cigar itself, the chestnut-brown wrapper is evenly colored, with a few thin veins. Under the fingers the wrapper has a subtle sandpaper like feel and is firm to the touch with no soft spots.
The Notes: After we cut the cap the notes are typical of Davidoff with notes hay, grass and earth. However, there is also a touch of a spice present on the cold draw which is atypical of the brand Meanwhile, the nose from the foot of the cigar has a subtle cedar and honey sweetness which is quite enjoyable. After we toast and light the cigar there is a subtle honey sweetness.
Moving into the first third of the Davidoff 702 Series Aniversario No. 3 the honey sweetness slowly begins to slide back some as cedar becomes dominant. As we move deeper into the cigar I find myself wishing I had a nice cognac to pair this cigar with as I feel they would compliment each other well.
In the second third the cedar notes take on more of an oak like characteristic with touches of earth, hay and a very subtle dark chocolate. The finish of the cigar is short to moderate in length and the retrohale serves up some subtle vanilla and nutty notes.
The last third sees the oak notes fade away, as wheat and earth develop become the focal point..The retrohale provides nuances of earth and nuts on the short, slightly spicy finish.
The Finish: Each size of the Davidoff Series 702 is different. The are based on the regular line of the particular vitola with the wrapper changing to the 702 hybrid wrapper. The cigar was perfect for the celebration at hand. For a Davidoff it’s a stronger cigar, though fans of strong cigars would most likely call this medium. I however call it box worthy.
