The Davidoff Winston Churchill Limited Edition has returned after taking 2020 off, which in retrospect we all could have taken off the year if we could. This year, the cigar returns in a Toro format in 10 count boxes with seven different tobaccos in its makeup. Davidoff stated in their press release, “Sir Winston Churchill was an exceptional man whose personality had so very many facets of brilliant talents, from statesman to commander, from author to painter – a unique character of its time. Usually, these personalities transform into mere history book figures, but not Sir Winston Churchill who still today is one of the most renowned and appraised public figures of the 20th century. At Davidoff we are humbled and excited to bringing to life the many dimensions and stories of this incredible leader, artist and writer while Sir Winston keeps carrying such deep inspiration to the world of today.”
Cigar Review: Davidoff Winston Churchill LE 2021
Binder: Dominican Hybrid 257
Fillers: Piloto Ligero, Hybrid 20-20 Seco, San Vicente Mejorado Ligero and San Vicente Visus (Dominican Republic); Estelí Visus (Nicaragua)
Ring Gauge: 52
The Look: Packaged in beautiful 10 count boxes, the Winston Churchill has a limited edition feel in its presentation. Featuring the Winston Churchill silhouette in gold on a white band, the secondary band of gray and gold denotes Limited Edition 2021. In the hand the cigar has a nice amount of oils and a hefty weight to it with a well packed foot.
The Notes: The cold draw serves up dense flavors from the five filler tobaccos includes molasses and apricots while the aroma from the foot is slightly floral with a hint of mocha. After properly toasting the foot the initial light serves up notes of dried apricots.
In the first third notes of earth are dominant with some apricot sweetness in the background along with notes of black pepper and cayenne. The retrohale serves up some black pepper and caramel that creates a lingering sweetness on the long finish of the Winston Churchill Limited Edition 2021.
In the second third, the caramel of the retrohale works its way to the palate though it is secondary to earth. At the half way point leather becomes dominant with a subtle creamy finish that continues to see caramel from the retrohale along with a touch of toffee.
The final third sees the addition of cinnamon, vanilla and cocoa which create a completely different experience than the first two thirds although a leather canvas remains.
The Finish: The Winston Churchill Limited Edition is a cigar the needs to be retrohaled to be properly enjoyed in my option. Without it, the cigar is dark with its earth and leather core flavors, however through the nose a sweetness helps balance the cigar.
