Diamond Crown No. 5 Cigar Review

Sometimes trying to figure out what to review can be a difficult decision. However, today the review was easy to come by when my friend Scott Rozycki reached out to me with a request to enjoy a Diamond Crown today on my birthday since he won’t be able to partake in his  go to brand. The reason being is that he is going under the knife. It’s not a major surgery and we expect a speedy recovery. So Scott, today’s cigar is for you… Here’s to you getting back on your feet soon…

Cigar Review: Diamond Crown
Size: 4.5 x 54 (No. 5)
Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut
Binder: Dominican Republic
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican Republic, Central America
Strength: Mild-Medium

The Look: In the box the Diamond Crown looks different. Instead of being packed traditional, they are laid out horizontally instead of vertically. The golden brown wrapper of the Diamond Crown is toothy and veiny with a nice amount of oils visible. The roll of the cigar is bumpy but there appears to be no soft spots and the foot is well packed. The band features a crown in a diamond, and that says it all.

The Notes: The cold draw serves up wonderful notes of maple and molasses with a subtle earthiness and pepper in the background, while the foot offers an aroma of hay, earth and a lingering pepper that causes me to sneeze. It’s an interesting yin-yang between the two ends and I am eager to light this up.

Once the cigar is toasted with what is becoming my favorite lighter, the Vertigo Intimidator the stick serves up a subtle sweetness and elements of earth and coffee. Moving through the first third the sweetness begins to develop a subtle vanilla like note that is heightened by the retrohale.

In the second third of the Diamond Crown #5 a wonderfully defined almond note begins to take hold of as the dominant flavor with subtle vanilla notes remaining on the retrohale. The second third of the cigar continues to be earthy and a little bit salty as well. The finish at this point of the cigar is moderate in length and earthy.

The last third of the Diamond Crown still continues to deliver some nuttiness but the almond definition has left the experience. The addition of some strong cedar notes becomes the dominant flavor profile with a touch of espresso and hay. The retrohale offers some spice which transitions this cigar from mild to medium.

The Burn: The Diamond Crown Connecticut lasted me about 90 minutes and features a razor-sharp burn with a thin combustion line. The light to medium color ash held for half the cigar and fell just as I was about to take a photograph. The draw of the cigar was exceptional and it remained lit from first light to last puff.

The Finish: The Diamond Crown #5 is my size of preference in the line and it’s something I was surprised to see I never reviewed. If it wasn’t for Scott asking me to smoke one for him; it would have continued to be missing from the website which is a shame because this is a solid shade grown cigar with a lot of complexity. A diamond might be a girls best friend, but a Diamond Crown is a friend for life.
