Legislation Week In Review Vol. 7

Each Friday we take a look at new legislation on a local or state level.. This is what is happening this week….

California – This week San Francisco voted to raise the tobacco age to 21, which some say is illegal due to state law. However, the Assembly of California has just passed a measure to raise the tobacco age on a state level. The measure needs to be approved by the senate next week and then signed by the Governor before it becomes law.

Massachusetts – A bill to raise the tobacco purchase age to 21 in the state was referred to the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. If it passes that committee bill S252 will head before the full senate.
Kansas – In some good news Leavenworth has decided not to pursue a measure that would have raised the tobacco age to 21 when the city leaders couldn’t come to an agreement on the issue.
West Virginia – A proposed tobacco tax was defeated with the state opting not to pass an increase that would have raised the OTP (Cigars) tax. While the measure was defeated the tax could come up again for debate in June.
