When I first started smoking cigars my go to cigar was a $4.00 Padron 2000 Natural. Over the years, cigar prices have skyrocketed but there are still some great value cigars out there. Tomorrow we will look at those cigars on The Cigar Authority. However, with my vacation 2 months away I have begun cutting back on my purchases to save a few extra dollars here and there which should add up to a really nice dinner with my wife while we are away.
So today I reach for one of the best-selling cigars at Two Guys Smoke Shop, the Dos Hombres. I opted for a Honduran Maduro which isn’t my usual go to stick in the line. That cigar happens to be the Dos Hombre Nicaraguan. But I needed to change things up so I would have a cigar to review today, April 7th, 2017.
Cigar Review: Dos Hombre Honduran Maduro
Wrapper: Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Honduras
Size: 6.5″
Ring Gauge: 44
Vitola: Lonsdale
The Look: I like to refer to cigars that come in bundles as no frills packaging. That is the case with the Dos Hombres Honduran Maduro. Like other Honduran Dos Hombres the cigar features a red band with he cartoon like logo of 2 Guys, aka Dos Hombres. The Honduran which features a slightly oily wrapper is also rugged looking. There is one vein of note on the wrapper which might be the only difference between this being on a $3.39 cigar versus a $9.00 cigar. The Lonsdale is well rolled with no soft spots and a well packed foot.
The Notes: Once we clip the cap, the cold draw of the cigar is relatively sweet with hints of prunes, raisins and a subtle cookie dough. The aroma on the wrapper and foot is warm and inviting and has a cookie dough like quality to it as well.
With a Lonsdale, which has a smaller ring gauge I like to use a single jet lighter such as the Colibri Eclipse. It makes it easier to light a smaller ring gauge with pinpoint accuracy. Once we toast and light the cigar there is a nice spice through the nose that doesn’t overpower the sinuses and the aroma of the cigar has warm baking spices that permeate the air. As for the flavor profile there are notes of dark chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. Yes the cigar reminds me of a s’more. Smoking further into the first third the notes begin to change.
In the second third the Dos Hombres Honduran Maduro changes up. The sweetness of the s’more has faded as the cigar begins to develop some rich espresso notes. There is still a faint dark chocolate that lingers ever so slightly on the long finish. The front end of the cigar develops some cinnamon on the front end with a leathery mouth feel on the finish.
As we close our cigar the aroma really stands out with hints of marshmallows and a subtle chocolate note that continues to linger on the finish ever so slightly. The spice kicks up a notch in the last third of the cigar that I smoke until there is nothing left to hold.
The Finish: I am the first person to admit I am a cigar snob. I’ve walked around a humidor before and saw the price of a cigar and said, nah, that’s too cheap. But there are some gems at the under $5.00 range and this is one of them. It’s a cigar that should be considered as an everyday smoke, and as cigar smokers sometimes we need to look past the price tag.
Score: 90
Price: $3.39 / $49.99
