Gran Habano Corojo #5 Rothchild Cigar Review

Gran Habano is one of those brands that have been around a forever but perhaps the are most famous for rolling the largest cigar ever made. Based in Honduras with offices in Calle Ocho, Miami, Florida the company headed by George Rico has become a mainstay and today we take a look at one of there core lines, the Corojo #5.

Cigar: Gran Habano Corojo #5
Wrapper: Honduras Corojo
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: : Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua
Length: 4.5″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Rothchild

The Look: Packaged in red boxes of 20 cigars the Gran Habano Corojo #5 features two bands. The primary band features high gloss gold foil with a busy design including a family crest. The secondary band has gold on red with the words Corojo #5. As for the cigar, the reddish-brown Corojo wrapper is loaded with veins and has a spongy like feel in the hands.

The Notes: The cold draw offers up notes of earth with a slightly floral component. The aroma off the foot of the cigar is sweet with a subtle cocoa and a delayed pepper note that takes a moment to register. Once the cigar is lit the first note is a definitive floral taste.

Moving to the first third of the cigar the floral notes continue to a level not seen in any cigar I have smoked outside of Gran Habano. Around a half-inch those floral notes pull back ever so slightly as some spice begins to appear in the form of red pepper. As the first third comes to a close, the cigar almost has a basil like aroma.

The second third sees the floral notes remain with a touch of earth and nuts. It’s a pretty straight forward cigar, with easily identified flavors and a continued spice on the retrohale.

The last third sees the floral notes disappear completely with nuts, cedar and earth serving as the primary taste. The retrohale offers more pepper notes with a rather short finish.

The Finish: Gran Habano cigars offer a very distinct flavor profile that I need to be in the mood for. The floral notes usually don’t work for me, but fans of the brand are very loyal to the company. It is that loyalty that has led to success for George Rico.

Score: 88
