Guardian of the Farm JJ Cigar Review

As has become customary on The Cigar Authority the Saturday following the podcast we feature an in-depth review of the cigar we smoked on the episode. We try to feature a cigar from the care package which is currently available for purchase via 2GuysCigars.com on behalf of show.

Cigar Review: Guardian of the Farm
Wrapper: Nicaragua  Corojo ’99 (Jalapa)
Binder: Nicaragua Corojo ’99
Filler: Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 and Nicaraguan Corojo ’99
Length: 5.25″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: JJ (Robusto)

The Look: The Guardian of the Farm JJ is packaged in cabinet style boxes of 20. Inside, the Guardian of the Farm is covered in a wrapper with some thin veins that is seamlessly rolled with a closed foot. The black and gold band gives a hint that the cigar is named for the dogs of Max Fernandez (Casa Fernandez) and Kyle Gellis (Warped Cigars).

The Notes: The cold draw and aroma off the foot are perfectly in sync with each other. Those notes consisted of nuttiness with a touch a sweetness and cedar. Once the cigar is quickly lit thanks to the closed foot the first identifiable note is a tangy citrus.

As we move into the first third the citrus note slides into the background as a nuttiness begins to develop. It’s slight sweet like almonds with a touch of cedar in the background. . As the third comes to a closet cedar notes pick up in intensity with an abundance of pepper on the retrohale.

Moving on to the second third the cedar notes continue to be the core of the cigar. At the half way point nuttiness begins to appear on the aroma as well as the finish. The pepper notes from the retrohale began to appear on the palate as the third comes to a close.

The last third sees the nuttiness become the focal point once again with the addition of cedar notes that are also noticeable on the aroma along with peanut shells.  The retrohale continues to see an abundance of pepper which takes me back to another well-known cigar that helped put Nicaragua on the map for the new school cigar smoker.

The Finish: We’ve smoked all four sizes of the Guardian of the Farm for review here at the Cigar Authority and while my personal favorite remains the Rambo, all four cigars pretty much the same. It really comes down to size preference when it comes to picking out this great Nicaraguan tobacco which features Aganorsa tobacco.

Score: 92
