This morning as I pulled into work the Executive Vice President of Hammer + Sickle, Erik Wentworth had just pulled in front of me. As we enjoyed our morning coffee he handed me today’s cigar which he delivered to 2GuysCigars.com after being out of stock for a short bit.
Cigar Review: Hammer + Sickle Trademark
Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Robusto
The Look: The Hammer + Sickle Trademark gets a packaging change, gone are the velvet boxes with the cigars now in slide top cedar boxes. Inside the Hammer + Sickle Trademarks are laid out in four rows of five cigars. The shade grown wrapper has a few veins and is firm to the touch with a nicely packed foot.
The Notes: The cold draw of the cigar has hints of butter and popcorn while the aroma off the foot has touches of wheat and hay.
The first third of the Trademark from Hammer + Sickle reveals some notes of caramel and oak with a buttery richness and a hint of earth on the short finish of the cigar. Through the nose there was a touch of pepper and an abundance of oak.
In the second third the cigar becomes extremely creamy and while the caramel begins to fade some nuttiness begins to develop with touches of molasses and buttery richness. Through the nose there is some cedar and oak.
The last third of the cigar sees the focal point of cedar with a touch a nuts. The cigar has a buttery finish with some pepper notes through the nose along with a woodsy finish.
The Finish: Maybe it’s because I haven’t smoked one in a bit, but the cigar had more depth to it then I remembered. It’s an iconic (see what I did there) cigar, and one that is best enjoyed with a morning cup of coffee or if you like mild cigars anytime of day. The Hammer + Sickle Trademark is worthy of space in my humidor and it should have some in yours too.
