If the FDA has their way I will really miss the release of the Limited Edition, as today’s limited edition and many limited edition cigars don’t meet the predicate date as it stands. In the end it hurts the cigar industry as a whole, but as a consumer I would suffer the greatest loss because much to a retailers dismay, I want what is new.
Today’s cigar is new in the sense that it is a 2017 release, but it was released last in 2011. The Jaime Garcia Limited Edition 2017 is limited to 3,000 boxes of 16 which translates to 48,000 cigars.
Cigar Review: Jaime Garcia Limited Edition 2017
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf (Viso Priming)
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua (Including 2 leaves of Pelo d’Oro)
Length: 6.5
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Toro
The Look: The Jaime Garcia comes in a hefty cigar box that is a true work of art. Inside the box, each cigar is packaged within its own divider much like a coffin with only 2 of the four sides. The cigar features two bands with one being the same as the regular release of Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial and the secondary one, denoting limited edition. The Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper is flawless with an amazing amount of oils present. In the hand the cigar has a hefty weight to it with a well packed foot.
The Notes: The cold draw offers up an abundance of prelight notes consisting of rich mocha that coats the palate with subtle hints of nuts and caramel and a wisp of floral components. The aroma off the foot and wrapper offers up muted notes of mocha with a subtle spice and more floral components.
Once the foot is toasted and lit, the first draw has a burst of pepper as you would expect from a stick that comes from My Father Cigars. Full strength from the get go the stick offers up a base note of leather with an abundance of cedar that continues long into the finish. The retrohale on the cigar adds a component of cocoa with red pepper notes.
As we breach the second third of the cigar and I grow accustom to the full strength nature of this complex smoke cedar has become the core note on this Jaime Garcia Limited Edition 2017. Additionally there are hints of leather and dark chocolate that provide an enjoyable long finish. The retrohale still serves up a subtle sweetness along with licorice and hints of red pepper.
As we enter the last third, the licorice notes that were on the finish become more dominant on the palate with continued cedar notes and a slight espresso like finish along with some leather nuances. The cigar is extremely smooth and flavorful but it is definitely a powerhouse and might just be the strongest cigar in the My Father portfolio.
The Finish: Mild cigar smokers need not apply. This is a cigar that is designed and geared for those that like full-bodied and full-strength cigars. I highly recommend smoking this after a hearty meal. It’s complex and enjoyable if you enjoy your cigars in that profile, like I happen to do. As you may know from listening to our podcast or reading this site I am a huge fan of Pelo d’Oro tobacco and this cigar did not disappoint.
