La Aurora 107 Nicaragua Robusto Cigar Review

We started off 2021 with La Aurora Master Blender, Manuel Inoa as we smoked the La Aurora 107 Nicaragua from the Care Package on the January 2, 2021 episode.  According to a press release, “Since 1903, La Aurora’s innovative and adventurous spirit set the groundwork for the Dominican Republic cigar culture as the oldest cigar factory in the nation. La Aurora 107 Nicaragua is created with their passion for perfection and attention to detail.” Using more than a century of knowledge and adventurous spirit La Aurora explores Nicaraguan tobacco in the new La Aurora 107 Nicaragua.

Cigar Review: La Aurora 107 Nicaragua
Wrapper: Nicaragua Habano
Binder: Nicaragua (Jalapa)
Filler: Nicaragua (Seco Condega, Esteli Viso, Ligero Condega, Ligero Esteli)
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Robusto

The Look: Packaged in 20 count boxes with a natural wood grain look and an oversized 107 logo the new La Aurora 107 Nicaragua pops on the shelves. The cigar features the classic 107 logo wit the La Aurora Lion which is a homage to the Leon family who owns the factory. The name Leon, translates to lion and the factory has remained in the family for 118 years and counting. Under the logo is a secondary band that features the word Nicaragua in gold on a brown background. The Nicaragua Habano wrapper is flawless with a nice amount of oils and in the hand the cigar is firm with no soft spots.

The Notes: Once the cap is clipped the cold draw serves up notes of tobacco and a subtle molasses while the aroma from the foot offers a cherry like sweetness. Once the foot is toasted the initial draw delivers a honey graham cracker note.

As we delve into the first third the graham cracker note slowly begins to fade as rich spices begin to develop consisting of nutmeg and ginger. The finish of the cigar is earthy with a moderate finish and smooth retrohale with a subtle pepper and licorice that lingers a fairly lengthy amount of time.

The second third continues to showcase notes of nutmeg with a hint of cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. It’s an exceptionally smooth and well balanced cigar that is full in flavor. This finish of the cigar serves up a hint of roasted nuts, licorice and a touch of leather that lingers on the palate.

The last third is smoked until there is nothing left as it serves up notes of spice, licorice and roasted nuts. All the notes blend together seamlessly with a nice earthy finish and the licorice is enhanced on the retro hall.

The Finish: The La Aurora 107 Nicaragua for me showcases the different ideologies of tobacco fermentation between Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. While this cigar uses all Nicaraguan tobacco its a more dense cigar with a thicker wrapper which for me is way more common for Dominican cigars. The feel of the cigar is very much La Aurora however, the experience is very different from what they have offered to date. It’s a very full flavor cigar with a medium-full strength profile. It’s a very interesting take on Nicaraguan tobacco, I just wish the tobacco was a little less dense.
