The La Aurora Time Capsule series is an interesting series of releases from La Aurora. Tomorrow we will feature the Corojo on the show and as requested by a few of our listeners here is a review to go along with the cigar we are smoking. The Time Capsule is available in three wrappers each one with a year attached to it representing the first time La Aurora used it. The 1903 Cameroon, 1987 Connecticut and today’s review the 1962 Corojo.
Cigar Review: La Aurora 1962 Corojo
Wrapper: Corojo
Binder: Ecuador
Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Robusto
The Look: The La Aurora comes packed in boxes of 20. The packaging and bands of the cigar are as old school as they come. Featuring a flip-top, wrapped box of 20 cigars that are laid out in 4 rows of five. The primary band has the La Aurora logo of a lion, which represents the history of the factory and the Leon family ownership. A secondary band denotes the wrapper, in this case Corojo. The wrapper is oily and toothy with the cigar be supple in the hand and the foot of the cigar slightly spongy.
The Notes: The cold draw of the cigar as a subtle raisin with an abundance of wood and earth. The aroma off the foot of the cigar is earthy with components of hay and sweet cedar. After we toast the foot and light the cigar the first note we taste is woodsy.
As we move into the first third of the cigar there is quite a bit going on for something with a low price point. There is the aforementioned cedar but also a sweetness that borders on cocoa. It’s faint and trying to develop but notes of red pepper, cedar and a touch of cinnamon dominate the palate with a earthy finish. On the retrohale there is a leathery component and the cigar has a short to moderate finish.
Moving on the the second third the sweetness begins to fade as the primary notes become cedar and earth. The cedar lingers on the finish where it is joined by some nuttiness along the lines of salted cashews. There is continued red pepper on the retrohale and the finish of the cigar is relatively short.
The Finish: The La Aurora Time Capsule is a very good every day cigar especially for the price. For a person like me who smokes approximately 5 cigars a day this is enjoyable for me as a first or last cigar of the day and it won’t break the bank especially on the box purchase side. While I enjoy the Cameroon a bit more than the Corojo both offer something for everyone.
