This time of year with all the new cigars coming out we tend to neglect our go to cigars, and for me one of those cigars for when I want something full-bodied is the La Flor Dominicana L300. For me it feels like the cigars coming from Litto Gomez aren’t your typical Dominican cigar, and that is a good thing.
According to their website The L300 is made with the darkest, richest Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers you will ever smoke, almost Maduro, but not quite… we call it Oscuro. The filler and binder are grown in our farm. “Expect a full flavor experience”.
The cigar is available in 6 sizes L200 (4 7/8 x 40), L250 (5.75 x 48), L300 (5.75 x 50), L400 (5.75 x 54), L500 (5.75 x 60) and Torpedo (4.75 x 50)
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana Ligero Oscuro
Size: 5.75 x 50 (L300)
Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatra (Oscuro)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Full
Source: La Flor Dominicana
The Look: The cigars from LFD are dark with thin veins and this is no different. The Oscuro wrapper is glistening with oils, and it just might be the oiliest oscuro wrapper around. The red, black and gold band has the signature LFD logo and denotes ligero underneath. The cigar is well packed with a nice weight and no soft spots.
The Notes: The cold draw on the La Flor Dominicana Ligero Oscuro has a delicious sweetness to that border on maple syrup and molasses. The sweetness is a bit misleading on what is about to come. The aroma off the foot is cedar with a slight vanilla bean.
As we smoke through the first third of the LFD L300 there is some spice through the nose, earth and cedar. Occasionally there is a subtle sweetness that comes and goes especially on the aroma of the cigar but noting like what was experienced on the gold draw.
In the second third of the cigar as to burn line gets closer to your nostrils there is a wonderful warm chocolate aroma. The cedar notes remain with a touch of black pepper through the nose and a slightly earthy finish.
The last third is definitely the strongest of the thirds, with some notes of pepper, cedar and a dark coffee finish.
The Burn: The slow burning L300 has a razor thin combustion line with a white ash that holds for more than a third at a time. The draw of the cigar has a slight resistance which is how I enjoy them. The cigar remained lit throughout and burned evenly.
The Finish: There is something about the L300 that brings me back every time. I wouldn’t call it overly complex, but it extremely consistent and when I want to smoke something on the full-bodied side, this is the cigar I will reach for.
