In 2015 the face La Flor Dominicana changed with the introduction of La Nox a cigar blended by the son of Litto Gomez, Tony Gomez. Last year, the company announced the release of 5 packs of LFD La Nox Petit. This year, the company released them in 50 count boxes. Today, we light up the La Flor Dominicana La Nox Petit.
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana La Nox
Wrapper Brazil Cubra
Binder: San Andres Mexico
Filler: Dominican Republic (including Pelo de Oro)
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 40
Size: Petit
The Look: Packaged in 50 count boxes, the cigars come without cellophane in a black slide top cabinet box. The 5 x 50 Petit band is scaled down from the original Toro release so it fits the smaller version of the La Nox. There is an abundance of oils on the perfect wrapper. In the hand the cigar feels light and it feels smaller than a 5 x 40.
The Notes: Prior to lighting the cigar there is an earthy aroma off the wrapper with a touch of cedar off the foot. The cold draw of the cigar has a sweetness to it that carries over to the first light, but before we can put our finger on it, pepper takes control as the first definable note.
Smoking into the first third of the La Nox Petit, there is a sweetness to the cigar the begins to re-emerge as the pepper notes fade away. There are hints of cocoa and cedar with a finish of raspberries and espresso. The retrohale of the cigar has a mocha like quality and the La Nox Petit as a prolonged leathery finish.
The second third of the cigar develops a maple syrup sweetness especially on the retrohale with nuances of coffee on the palate. Around the halfway point there is a component that reminds me of the chocolate wafer on an ice cream sandwich. The cigar which is really flavorful has a leathery finish that is long and savory.
The last third of the La Flor Dominicana Petit La Nox still has some of that chocolate wafer from an ice cream sandwich with hints of cedar, nuts and coffee. The finish of the cigar is more wood notes then that of leather and the retrohale of the cigar introduces a touch of cinnamon.
The Finish: While this cigar might be Petit in stature and name, it is BIG on flavor. The La Flor Dominicana La Nox Petit is every bit as good as the original if not better. It totally caught me off guard with its complexity, and in the world of large ring gauge cigars it is nice to see more cigars of this size make an appearance in 2017.
